Abbie vs the Rattlesnake
Abbey was bitten by a rattlesnake around 9:30am on Tuesday. She and Gideon were in the driveway. Elijah was in the yard. Gideon was riding Abbey's trike and saw the snake next to our workshop door. He says that he stopped riding so that she would stop walking backward and yelled to her, "Abbey! There is a snake behind you!" Abbey put her foot back and stepped on it and then it bit her.
Amazingly, they both remember the events clearly and communicated the same story when we asked them separately. They both mentioned the snake flicked its tongue and neither heard a rattle, Abbey added the important detail that snakes don't have lips and she is 100% certain it was a boy snake.
I was headed outside with them and heard her scream (didn't actually think much of it as there is lots of screaming here). She was running for the door and Elijah and Abbey said that she was bitten by a snake. I scooped her up, she quit crying, and I sat her on the kitchen counter where she finished off a peanut butter covered pancake while I dialed 911. I didn't think it could possibly be a rattlesnake because she was calm and not in much pain. Elijah watched the snake to make sure it didn't away. "Marshall" got there first and then a pile of our other EMT friends. 2 EMT's killed the snake and buried it. We took off in the ambulance for Torrington. Before we hit highway 85 they had the chopper on the way from Cheyenne (Scottsbluff Airlink was out on another call). I was able to choose which hospital we went to and since Matt works in Cheyenne I decided on there.
We stopped in Hawksprings to pick up 2 other EMTs that had advanced life support training. They tried their best to get an IV in but couldn't do it. We got to the hospital and they couldn't get an IV in there either which is why they gave her ketamine to get it in. The AirLife helicopter was there just a few minutes after we arrived. They put her in the chopper and started the crofab, which Torrington had stocked, on the way.
Then Nana, who had met me at the hospital, and I drove back to Lagrange to pick up clothes and update the boys who had been cared for by our pastor's wife and some friends. They were swimmig in her pool when I got there and not sure why I made them get out. ; ) We sat down and I explained what was going on and was frank about how serious Abbey's injury was. We prayed together and then I left them to play in the pool and Nana and I went to the hospital.

Matt sat in the Cheyenne ER waiting for her to arrive. He had been at work in a meeting when he began getting calls from home. I had told Elijah keep calling Dad until he picks up. He ignored the first 4 and then figured something must be up and answered. When it was his turn in the meeting to update the team on what he was working on he said, "I'm almost done with X's computer, my 3 year old got bit by a rattlesnake and I have some stuff to do at DCI. It took people a few seconds to process the middle job. He got the day off.

Poor Abbie.

Dr. Coolidge - 1st year resident. We saw lots of her in the ER and pediatrics.

Here is a cake her friend made just for her. She loved it.
Jun11 was the day Abigail got the bite. The 11 on the cake decoration were supposed to be two little baby snakes. :)
We may celebrate every Jun11 as Snake Day. What better reason could we have to celebrate? We are so thankful to have her home.

PRANKS!
Elijah and Sam are pulling pranks on Matt and I. He and I went over to the neighbors tonight after the little ones were asleep leaving just Sam and Elijah up and about.
We came back to our bedroom and found the floor covered with cups of water, our sheets crumpled at the end of our bed, all the light bulbs removed, our clothes hidden, and whole unopened toilet rolls stuffed in our pillows. Elijah and Sam giggled uncontrollably as we surveyed their work.
My favorite part of the whole thing is they were having fun together. It made me so happy to see brothers acting like friends. Also, I can enjoy a prank or two.
At least one of their pranks is as yet undiscovered. They say we will find it in the morning. hehehe. Feels like Christmas.

the rub
during evening story time the kids sometimes rub mom's feet. tonight Sam gave a foot massage for the most of it. after story time was over Sam looked up the legs of the owner of the feet and yelled, "hey! those aren't mom's feet, I've been rubbing luke's feet!" I think he was truly horrified.
as we were reviewing this post, sam said, "It would be funnier if you capitalized your sentences."

Real Pie?
Yesterday Matt came home and was telling me about his day. It was all computer blarg to me until he
mentioned asking his boss how the raspberry pie on his desk was. Ah a conversation I can enjoy. His boss said not working well for him, but did he want to give it a try. Matt said sure.
I thought how nice Matt got some raspberry pie at work. So I asked him about it, "What did he mean not working for him? Did it not taste good?"
He gave me a look like, you weirdo, what are you talking about?
Hmm raspberry Pie must be more computery blarg and not a real pie.
Sure enough it is Raspberry Pi and it is a computer. Honestly! How would anyone know that?
I really don't think I'm the weirdo. I think raspberry pie in conversation should be assumed to be edible. And this goes for "Ice cream sandwiches" (Android) and "cookies" (stored information).
Who's with me?!

Tools
Elijah just finished making his first tool with a metal lathe. I'm so impressed. It looks like the one below but without the blue handle. It is used for getting dents out of cars. I should take a picture of him with the real one...

Life in the day
Today I used the boys bathroom. I lifted the lid - which was closed!- and sat down. As I finished I happened to look down and realized the entire seat that I was sitting on was COATED with dark black poo. I had to climb on a step stool to look at my thighs in the mirror to see if I had gotten it all off.
I share this because I talked to my sis today and she mentioned how facebook posts make it seem like moms have it all together.
Well the proof is in the poo. We do not. Also while she was on the phone I caught Abbey hiding under the table eating sugar out of a bag with a spoon.

These are a few of my favorite things...
One of the things I really enjoy about being a mother is feeding my children a healthy lunch. Todays menu was chicken salad (made with greek yogurt instead of mayo and mixed with celery and almonds) on organic whole wheat bread with tomato slices and a fresh fruit salad with kiwi mango strawberries and oranges.
Yesterday was a vegetable soup made with fresh onions, carrots, celery, potatoes, and a few split peas. I threw in some canned corn and kidney beans and topped it off with whole wheat croutons. Yum. plus it was a cold snowy day and it made for a soup that warmed inside and out.
right now we are all waiting for Sam to finish diagramming 3 sentence then we will eat our sandwiches and fruit salad. These 3 sentences are really being drug out... ok 1 left...LETS EAT!!

The things I text (gmail chat actually) to Matt while he is at work
Robin: Sam has a shopvac in the toilet and is sucking out the poopy contents.
Matt: Wow.
Robin: Gideon dropped the top of your electric razor into his poop and flushed. Im paying Sam $5.50 to retrieve it. If he is unsuccessful I am paying $4.00.
Matt: you think it is still down there?
Robin: well the toilet is stopped up so I hope so.
Also somebody stopped up the other toilet with too much TP and Abbey flushed and the toilet overflowed in the other bathroom. I have house guests coming tomorrow.
I see now why mothers get jobs and send their children to daycare.
I can hear screaming now coming from the other room. THEY FOUND IT!
Gideon: WE GOT IT OUT BUT THERES POO ON IT!! SAM GETS FIVE BUCKS! CLOSE YOUR EYES ITS SCARY!!
I dont know maybe it is worth staying home for... ; )
